I apologize for the duplication of this notice to some recipients, hope to see everyone this Wednesday!! This email is being sent to the email list to ensure that everyone that signed up gets a notice of this important event. The Joint Meeting between Martin County Commissioners, School Board Members and City of Stuart Commissioners will be this Wednesday. Please see the attached agenda. Wednesday, June 18th at 9:00 AM Blake Library- John F. Armstrong wing 2351 SE Monterey Road, Stuart The third agenda item is Public Comments and the sixth item is the Swimming Pool Update including the new Aquatics Center and the inter-local agreement to keep the Community Pool open past June, 2009. Currently, I think we will just have one speaker present a summary of what we have already presented to the School Board and County and let our presence there speak for the enthusiasm we have for swimming and for keeping the Community Pool open. Save Our Pool Update - County Commission Meeting

Just a quick note to let everyone know that the county approved all three of the Parks and Recreation Department's recommendations for the pool today. Here they are in case you missed them: 1) Extended the interlocal agreement with the School Board until the new aquatics complex is ready. 2) Changed the land use designation for the Wright land parcel (on Willoughby, across from MCHS) to designate that parcel for the new aquatics complex. 3) Enter into negoatiations with a contractor/builder to build/operate the complex. Susan Valliere and Michael DeTerlizzi modified this by specifying that a 50 meter pool be pursued. If you have time, please drop them a thank you note or phone call or something. Mike Willis

Save Our Pool - Republican Meet the Candidates Luncheon

Received the following email from the Republican Party of Martin County. These are usually nice luncheons where most (if not all) of the candidates attend. It sounds like it a good time to ask the candidates where they stand on the pool situation. I can not make it, so I hope that maybe somebody else can. Save Our Pool - County Commission Meeting Update

Hi Everyone, Please make plans to be at the County Commission building (the red brick building on Monterey Road just west of East Ocean Blvd.) by 4pm on Tuesday. Please be sure to wear your Save the Pool T-shirts and bring your signs from the school board meeting. Again we want to create awareness of the pools situation and at all times we must be professional and courteous. Once we are in the Chambers, we will make our statement through our shirts and signs, and by being quiet and courteous. We have several speakers including Dr. John Powers. He was the president of Kiwanis when the pool was built in 1975 and the pool was his baby. He will speak in favor of keeping the pool open. We also have the Special Olympians making another appearance, along with Jenna Kingsley doing an encore presentation of her wonderful speech she presented to the school board and the letter and petitions will once again be presented. We need lots of people to show up for this very important meeting. The new aquatics complex is being discussednow is our time! If you have any questions, please call me at 530-8018. [SOP Notice] Candidate Forum for Superintendant

Candidate Forum for Superintendant to be hosted by Palm City Chamber & Economic Council of Martin County on Wed., April 30th 7:30 AM @ Monarch CC. RSVP by 4/28. Members $15, Non-members - $25. This would be a great place to show up with our blue tee shirts. Perhaps the candidates will have a position on the coming closure of the Martin County Community Pool and the important programs it facilitates. We need to know where the candidates stand on this issue

Save Our Pool Electronic Bulletin Board System

I have added a bulletin board system to the www.saveourpool.org web site. These can be a very effective tool for people to discuss upcoming issues and coordinate their efforts. Please check it out and sign up for it if you can. If it's popular enough, then we could even stop using the email list. You can set your bulletin board membership to send you an email whenever a new post arrives, that way you can always have the latest information. There is a new article about closing the pool in the Stuart News. Perception is everything, we need to make this an issue that everyone notices. If none of the core group even make comments, then what do we have of generating support outside of the swimming community. Almost everyone I know supports keeping the pool open, however they are looking at us to see how important this issue is. Please help by showing interest in the stories that the Stuart News is publishing. The Palm Beach Post has also written another story. Parks & Rec Meeting Tonight

I can not make this meeting tonight because I have to coach a soccer game. The meeting begins at 5:30 in the County Admin Building on Monterey. It's on the 4th floor. The pool issue is kind of low on the agenda so it will probably not be discussed until later in the meeting. SOP - Send letters to reporters

Letters like this help to develop good will with the reporters which hopefully will result in more coverage of our issue. I have to tell you I'm a little skeptical of Ms. Wilcox's statements, as her assistant, Mr. Salzer seems to be opposed to School Board support of the pool as reported by the Stuart news, whereas he is quoted as saying something to the effect, "we are not in the swimming or pool business". I confronted Ms. Wilcox last night with his statements and her reply was that he said "we're not in the community pool business", she further added that the school Board has difficulty collecting the county's share of the financial obligation. I then mentioned that I wasn't pleased with the manner the teachers contract was handled, my understanding is that the teachers were told to agree or lose their retro pay. I told her that seemed like extortion to me and she then offered to take a phone call from me to further explain the situation. Most recently the dismissals of the teachers at one of our Elementary schools, without explanation has further created some distrust for me. There are so many reasons to keep this pool, both tangible and intangible that I hope the News will stay on top of this and hold these "community leaders" accountable for their statements. Please if you have a chance correct me if I have any misconceptions about the above referenced situations. These people seem to be "politicians" first and possibly will say anything to make themselves look good and then pass the buck. We need to keep the pressure on them to do the right thing for our kids and this community. I'm not going to list all the reasons for saving the pool and the implications of Ms. Wilcox's off the record comments to me, as I assume you are already aware of all the teams, groups, and organizations that utilize the pool. Maybe the county should build the Aquatics complex for community purposes and keep the pool at MCHS for our high school teams. Or perhaps we should close our beaches, if we don't have a facility to train our Life Guards and Water Safety instructors, and what about all the kids and others who would lose a place to learn to swim and about water safety. Who cares about all the possible drownings, if we don't have a facility to teach the skills needed. We can just put it all on the YMCA, that should be adequate. Please forgive my sarcasm, but I very concerned about what's happening in many areas of the community services that make Martin county such an attractive a place to live. Martin County Pool Supporters Message

There are a couple of news articles today that everyone should read. It would also be a good idea to add your own comments to the comments section of the tcpalm.com (Stuart News) article. This article makes it sound like the Board and the County Commission have everything taken care of. My first impression was that a lot of whining swimmers attended to complaint about their private sport was no longer being supported by the government. If we want to gain public support, then we need more people to respond and write a quick note of support or more info to that story. Please help Save Our Pool!
